Eccentric Teapot Design

Eccentric Teapot Design: Robbie Southall

The assignment was to design an eccentric teapot inspired by something, or multiple things, from everyday life. I chose to seek inspiration from a garden in the spring. To create my design I used google slides, google to find the pictures, and a pencil and paper to draw the final product.

If I was to actually make this teapot the body would have the texture of a strawberry and the snail's shell would have the grooves of a real shell. Texture is important in nature and something I would definitely want to include. There's a sense of unity because while everything included is related, it isn't of one object. When I first started designing I wanted the body to be the snail shell, but I decided to make a design that sought inspiration from many places. I also thought I wanted to have a bright red body, but decided the teapot would look better if it was monochromatic with many different shades and tints of green.

I chose the final composition because when I was little I remember picking slimy little snails off leaves in our garden and I used a watering can with a similar spout. This teapot reminds me of preparing a garden for planting and tending to the garden all summer. Besides the memory aspect of this teapot, it is related to me because I came up with the idea and how I wanted to incorporate many different aspects. I'm proudest of the snail on top because while it's random, it gives the teapot a unique touch. I struggled the most with deciding what I wanted my teapot to be inspired by and look like, I spent a long time looking at pictures of other "eccentric teapots" and different things I like. At first I considered a forest inspired teapot, but then I saw a picture of a snail eating a strawberry and that inspired by final design. I overcame the struggle by taking time to research different ideas and think about what I liked and wanted. Something that bothers me is that I won't have the opportunity to actually make this teapot due to remote learning. Maybe someday in the future I'll have the chance!
