About Craig Reilly

Reilly is a London-based street photographer. He is a co-founder of Street Photography International. He often uses shadows and different kinds of lighting in his photos.

C & T: Selective focus (shadow v house), informal balance (windows), leading lines (branches) and grouping (trees)

C & T: Rule of thirds (shadows in 2/3), selective focus (shadows v wall), grouping (lines in shadow) and informal balance (shadows v windows)

C & T: Formal balance (centered), selective focus (head v background) and low horizon line.

The subjects of these images were inspired by street-photographer Craig Reilly. In the first two I was inspired by his use of lighting in his photos with shadows. I took one outside and one inside next to a group of windows. The third photo I was inspired by his usage of windows to take portraits. I shot it from inside, looking out. To take these images I used my 35mm film camera, materials to roll and develop my film and materials to enlarge and process my photos. These images have use of lines, texture, positive and negative space and contrast with the values. There is pattern in the second images from the shadow.

These images started on a roll of film which I processed and then made a contact sheet (pictured above). I chose images and tried enlarging them by making test strips and seeing which images were higher quality. For the first image I made multiple test strips before choosing F8, no filter at 3 secs. The second image I again made multiple test strips before choosing F8, no filter at 3 secs. For the third image I made test strips without a filter and then with a 3 filter. the final was at F8, #3 filter at 4 secs. After processing these images I cut them down to 5 x 7.

For my independent study I research a photographer for inspiration and to help improve my photography. I struggled with this photographer because I had a hard time finding places and time to take true street photography. I chose to focus on his architecture photos more than people. These images relate to my life because I took them and went through the process, but also because I chose what I wanted to capture and how. I think these images could be stronger with the subjects and the processing. The final week of my independent study is devoted to revisiting photographers and redoing any prints that I feel could be stronger, I think i'll reprocess the first image and use a filter.
