I am proudest of my Historical Coil Pot because I have never built something this big using coils. It helped me work on my coiling skills and they improved a lot as I continued to work. While the final pot doesn't have the exact same form as the one I inspired it off of, it does have a nice form that curves out, in and back out. Making it curve was challenging, and something I had to learn how do. I like how the glaze came out, it was one of my first projects where I layered glaze and I wasn't sure what to expect. My favorite part is how the glaze broke at the spots where there are fingerprints and other marks, it adds texture to the surface.
Before taking this class I didn't know much about ceramics, just the basics from elementary school. This class taught me about using clay to make something is expressive and that there isn't a certain way something should look when using clay. It also taught me about glazing, that you don't need to stick with one color and how beautiful they can be when you layer them. This element of glazing appeals to me because I love color, but I'm not very good at painting pictures, with glaze it's ok if it is messy or abstract. Taking this class has made me more aware of pottery in the world around me, I can look at something and understand how it was made or glazed. This class has made me interested in continuing ceramics because you can do so many different things with it.
I loved this class because of how much freedom we had to create. I liked how we were given an assignment, but it wasn't overly specific. One thing I found challenging was that some projects were really quick while others I felt rushed. I think this was more about how fast I built and glazed by projects, not because of the class. Another thing that was sometimes challenging was figuring out what to make, what has helped in other classes is showing student examples. This happened sometimes, but it could have happened more. Overall I loved this class and I hope to take ceramics 2 next year!
