value scale

self-portrait
First we made a value scale so we would know the all of the values and how to make them using a pencil. Then I chose a picture of myself and turned it black and white, printed it and put a 1 inch grid of 8 x 10 on it. This was so on the bigger piece of paper I could draw my face using values in the grid square by square. For the self-portrait I used pencils of different values and softness and a tortillon to blend the values then for the background I used watercolor pencils then blended them with water. My drawing started out as just a light outline of my hair, which I drew square then I added the value of my hair. After doing my hair and head shape I added my eyes, mouth, nose and eyebrows and shirt. I blended a lot and it turned out well because it got rid of almost all of the lines which is what I wanted because it is a value drawing not a line drawing, this is what i'm most proud of. I struggled with all of the facial features and the values on the face because I would make the values too dark, then too light and the facial features would be crooked or wrong proportion. I overcame my troubles with the facial features because I asked Mr. A for help but the values on my face are still a little off. I like my portrait how it is, but if I could change one thing I would use a photo with better quality because my phone made it really grainy and hard to make out the details.
