Sections are a lookup list of standard sizes commonly used in printing. Sections determine how BOS behaves and how the printing and paper is calculated in the Estimate.
Main Menu > Setup > Sections
Before you create a new Section you will need to complete the following setups:
The sections Setup has 3 Tabs:
Main Menu > Setup > Sections > New/Edit
Make sure to first understand the different Section Types (see below).
4. Print Type - This is where you link the Section to a Print Type, such as litho, large format, digital, continuous, flexo etc. More about printing types.
5. Section size (DxW) - This is where you enter the vertical and horizontal dimensions of this section in mm. Traditionally, size is indicated vertically and then horizontally, eg A4 Portrait will be entered as 297 x 210, and A4 landscape will be entered as 210 x 297.
When entering the section size, make sure the section orientation (portrait or landscape) is the same as the press work size orientation for Imposition ease.
6. Bleed - This is where you set the margin or bleed in mm to be added to each side of the section.
7. Repeats - This indicates the number of times the Section is repeated, eg - An 8-page section will be repeated 4 times to make up a 32-page magazine.
8. Size (For Quote) - This is where you can enter your finish size. This will automatically populate the Size field in the Estimate header if it is blank. This is a text field that can be manually entered or populated from the lookup list. The lookup list can be updated using the Edit icon next to the field.
9. Add to Quote Description - If this is selected, this Section's information will be added to the Quote Letter's description.
This is used to automatically select the Press and the Imposition generally used to print this Section. Estimators will be allowed to override the default selection.
If a Default Press is not selected, the Estimator will simply select a press from the Presses list when making a Printing Estimate.
Main Menu > Setup > Sections > New/Edit > Default Press
To add a new Default Press click Add. To edit the existing press double-click or right click on the press and select Edit.
Main Menu > Setup > Sections > New/Edit > Default Press > Add/Edit
Once a Default Press has been set-up, it will automatically be selected in the Estimating 'Select Press' window. See image below:
This is where mandatory Finishing Services can be linked to the Section, eg Cutting for Business Cards, or Section folding for a Magazine Section. These Services will automatically be added to an Estimate when this Section is added to an Estimate.
Main Menu > Setup > Sections > New/Edit >Finishing
When a Finishing process is linked to a Section, it will be shown when making a Printing Estimate under the Finishing tab. See screenshot below:
4. Add Item from Services - This allows you to select Services to add to the Finishing. See image below:
Section Type defines how the Section behaves in BOSPrint and how the Estimate is calculated. There are four Section Types available in BOSPrint:
This would be applicable for Sections that have commonly-used specifications, such as for business cards, A4 posters, etc. Below is an example of how to setup of an A4 leaflet using a Standard Section Type, with the fields that are specific to this setup:
This type of Section is applicable for NCR books and continuous forms that contain sets with the same artwork. Below is an example of how to setup an NCR books Section Type, with the fields that are specific to Duplicate Section Type.
This is applicable for bookwork such as magazines, brochures, etc. Once selected, the Bookwork Section Calculator button becomes visible.
By using the Bookwork calculator the Description fields will automatically be populated.
Below is an example of how to setup a 16 page A4 portrait Section, with the fields that are specific to a Bookwork Section Type.
A. Page size (DxW) - Enter the vertical and horizontal values of the final page size, eg 297 x 210.
B. Bleed - Spine - Enter the bleed in mm for the page, eg 3mm.
C. Spine - This is for the cover only, and allows you to make provision for the width of the spine (as above).
D. Pages (Across x Down) - Enter the quantity of pages from left to right, top to bottom, as they will be laid out on the print sheet, eg 4 x 2.
E. Rotate - Select if these pages need to be rotated in order to produce better imposition.
F. Section size (DxW) - This is calculated automatically based on Page size, Bleed, and Pages.
G. Pages - This is calculated automatically and shows the total number of pages in this Section.
Click Accept to automatically populate the remaining Settings fields.
This is applicable for custom impositions where the Section is not regular, and might overlap. Eg, folding die-cut cartons, as below.
Below is an example of how to create a Custom Section Type for a trianglular carton with 50x100mm sides, with the fields that are specific to a Custom Section Type.
This type is useful for a scenario where multiple colour and plate changes are made during only one pass.
So if 4 colours are linked to the Section, it is assumed they are printed using one pass with washups added for each colour. Eg. on a Qty of 1000, 100 = Spot A, 400 = Spot B, 300 = Spot C and 200 = Spot D.
The image below illustrates the difference between a Standard Section and a Single Pass section using a 1 station Litho press - On the Standard Section, 5 passes are assumed and on the Single Pass section only 1 pass is assumed.
The next image illustrates how the Description is generated for a Single Pass section, compared to the Description of a Standard section:
When using a Single Pass Section in Estimating the paper calculation will add MR Overs for the maximum of Total Colours and Plates for the maximum Total Plates used.
