I can estimate the mass of different objects.
I can use the correct language to describe mass.
I can compare and measure using balance scales.
In pairs students to go and pick up one light and one heavy/heavier item in the classroom. Discuss! Which is Lighter? Which is heavier? Why? May wish to start brainstorm on the baord.
Year 1: Number Sense - Trusting the count.
Year 2: Times Tables Boot Camp
What in the classroom may be referred to as light?
Have students look around the room and identify objects that are very light.
Pass the objects around so students can feel the mass of the object.
What in the classroom may be referred to as heavy?
Discuss how some objects cannot be lifted so they must be heavy.
Fold a piece of paper in half and write the heading ‘heavy’ and light. Students draw and label objects from the classroom that are heavy and light.
Children can order objects from lightest to heaviest
Teachers to decide on a support or extension group to work with.
What have we learnt today/what questions do we still have? You may wish to make a chart.
I can estimate the mass of different objects.
I can use the correct language to describe mass.
I can use the more appropriate tool to measure different masses.

Watch Mass Video and slide show
Choose two objects (pencil case, container, book) and ask the students which one they think is heavier. Encourage students to name objects in the classroom that are heavier than the original object. e.g.: What things would be heavier than the pencil case.
Students test these in the scales.
Students are to use objects found around the classroom to compare the mass of two objects using the scales .
Year 1: Draw these objects on the scales.
Year 2: Students to write sentences in their math's book using the terms ‘____is heavier/lighter then_____’
Teachers to decide on a support or extension group to work with.
Share some findings as a class.

Model using a balance scale to measure the mass of an object.
Students use a form of informal units to measure objects on the worksheet.
Teachers to decide on a support or extension group to work with.
Reflect on how accurate / inaccurate our predictions were. Did anyone guess exactly right?

Year 2: Times Tables Boot Camp
Model reading a problem, looking for key words and explore different strategies to solve the problem.
Grade 1s may wish to do these all as a class or just choose one for students to go off and do independently.
Students are to complete relevant mass worded problem worksheets.
Students to play maths games when they finish the sessions page.
Teachers to decide on a support or extension group to work with.
Share findings to worded problems as a class.

Year 2: Times Tables Boot Camp
Brainstorm some heavy and some light objects / animals / etc.
Model making scale craft with correct tip on the scales (e.g. heavy item is low, light item is up. students draw their own heavy/light object and cut it out.
Students make their own scale mass craft.
Teachers to decide on a support or extension group to work with.
