Hook:
Read class novel
Mini Lesson:
Teacher writes a few words on the board (unhappiness, disagreement, beautifully, indecisive).
Students work in pairs to:
Identify the base word.
Highlight the prefix.
Highlight the suffix.
Say what class the word belongs to (noun/verb/adjective/adverb).
Class share – highlight how a single base word can “grow” in different directions.
Prefixes add meaning but don’t usually change spelling of the base word (un-, dis-, re-, mis-).
Suffixes often change word class and follow specific spelling rules (drop the e, double the consonant, change y to i).
Base words are the “root” that carries the main meaning.
Show a quick example:
Base word: decide → decision (noun) → decisive (adjective) → indecisive (prefix + suffix).

Paraphrase:
Paraphrasing is when you take a sentence or idea and say it in a different way using your own words. It’s like retelling something you’ve read so it makes sense to you but still means the same thing.
Go through the following PowerPoint as a class: Paraphrasing
