Hook:
Read class novel- students have mini white boards and write down any tier 2 words they hear. Add to VCOP posters.
Mini Lesson:
Write these base words on the board: achieve, move, create, attract, govern, improve.
In pairs, students add either –ment or –ive and share the new words.
Teacher leads discussion: Which became nouns? Which became adjectives? Why?
–ment: changes verbs into nouns (the action or result).
achieve → achievement (result of achieving).
move → movement (act of moving).
–ive: changes words into adjectives (describing a quality).
create → creative (having the quality of creating).
attract → attractive (having the quality of attracting).
Point out: These suffixes come from Latin roots, common in formal or academic words.
