Hook:
Read mentor text.
Watch Origin. Ask these inferring questions:
- Why do you think the robot chose to leave the factory?
- What clues tell us that the robot hadn’t seen nature before?
- What might the ending of the film suggest the robot will do next?
Mini Lesson:
Discuss inferences: An inference is something that you figure out without being told. You use clues and what you already know. A formula: inference = clues + what you already know.
Ask:
- You see wet footprints on the floor and an open umbrella by the door. What can you infer?
- Your friend is quiet and not smiling at play time. What can you infer?
Co-construct an anchor chart.
Rotations:
Rotation 1: Teacher Group, focus on PLC crumb.
Rotation 3: Independent Reading: Students read their book club text OR a book from their book box. They respond to inference questions in their Reader’s Notebook (provide a printed copy).
Rotation 4: Select level appropriate to students in group. They will read the passage and respond to the questions (making inferences focus).
Alternative activities, Independent reading, Prodigy
Reflection
Who can share an inference they made from reading their text today?
Hook:

Ask students:
- What happened right before this picture was taken?
- What clues might tell you that?
- What might happen next?
Mini Lesson:
Use the PPT to revisit different ways to make inferences. Update anchor chart if necessary.
