"rupt" is a root word used in morphology, the study of the structure and formation of words. It comes from the Latin root ruptus, meaning "to break" or "burst."
Students on whiteboard brainstorm words they can think of that have the word ‘rupt ‘ in it.
Explain that Interrupt – to break into a conversation or activity
Disrupt – to break apart or disturb
Erupt – to burst out suddenly
Corrupt – to break moral or ethical integrity
Bankrupt – literally “broken bank”;
