Brainstorm Key Language:
fraction, numerator, denominator, part and whole
Create an anchor chart on A3 with these terms and visual examples.

Create fraction wall and how it is helpful
Model the fraction wall using this link and show connection between equivalent fractions.
Students to create a NEAT 'fraction' cheat sheet in their maths book that can be built on and referred to. At this stage only include definition, basic equivalents, representing parts of a whole...
A double page will be needed but save lots of space...lots more learning to do!
Support: Use the blank Fractions wall template

What is the difference between part of a whole figure and part of a whole collection?
Examples for an object or figures include cutting up a a whole orange into equal pieces.
Examples of a collection include a carton of eggs and all the planets in the solar system (as per the hook video).

What was challenging? What is clearer for you now? Is there anything you can add to your Fractions cheat sheet? Include two number lines - one with like denominators and one with unlike denominators (use equivalent fractions to help you!)

How many unique combinations of fractions can you come up with that equal 1? Eg 1/2 + 1/2 (hint: do you have to have the same denominator???)
Mini Lesson
Explore adding and subtracting fractions with concrete materials. Use full packets of textas or pencils and show connection between the physical and written fraction.
What happens when you have more pencils than you need to make a full packet? What does this look like as a fraction? It is called an improper fraction. How can you then turn it into a proper fraction (mixed whole and parts).

Choose the appropriate leveled worksheet to practise adding and subtracting. Remember both denominators MUST BE THE SAME to add or subtract and what you do to the bottom you must do the top!
