Mini Lesson
Revise place value.
Introduce and revise decimals within place value using Maths Antics-Rounding
Have a class discussion on why we round and estimate.
Rounding and estimating in math are useful tools for simplifying complex problems and making calculations quicker and easier. Here’s why we use them:
Simplicity
Time-saving
Practicality
Error-checking
Display the image below on the board and work through the questions as a class

Mini Lesson
Model how to round the numbers to estimate the sum of the following questions using strategies from Rounding to Estimate the Sum

Using a deck of cards draw out 4 cards (6253) write an equation 62x53= then round to the nearest 10. 60x50= 3000. You might need to model how to multiply when the equation ends in 0. Students complete 5 multiplication equations.
Then repeat with 5 additions. This time draw out 6 cards (174518) 17+45+18= 20+40+20= 80
Reflection
When will this strategy be useful?

Complete the following questions as a class. Teacher to discuss greater than, less than with the students. Revise Decimal Place Value. Order decimals in size order: Model how 344.657 is the same as 300+40+4+ 657/1000
344.846 is the same as 300+40+4 +846/1000
Discuss which decimal is smaller 657/1000 is smaller than 846/1000

Create a 3 digit by 3 digit equation (with dice or cards) 475 X 296 [ ] 385 X 836 place greater than or less than sign in the middle.
Students can create 5 greater than less than equations. Get the person next to them to check their answer OR justify your answer to your partner.
Finally take the 5 decimals that students made up in lesson 1 and place them in order smallest to largest.
Reflection
What strategy did you use to order decimals smallest to largest?
