Play a game of Spelling Buzz: Teacher tells class a word to be spelt.
Each person goes around and says a phonogram (eg. if it is a 2 letter phonogram /ea/ must be said, and not /e/ /a/ to spell out the spelling word (no peeking!). Pick a phonogram as BUZZ. If someone misspells the word or says the buzz phonogram, they are eliminated and must sit out. Once the whole word is spelt correctly, the remaining players continue.
