Adding a vowel suffix (ed, ing, est,er, ous) to a one syllable word (1), with one vowel (1) followed by one consonant (1) NOT in the Black Box W,X &Y, double the consonant ending of the base word and add the vowel suffix.
lap + ed = lapped (adding vowel suffix to a 1 syllable word which has 1 vowel followed by 1 consonant (and it’s not w, x or y) so we double the p and add ed)

Explicitly teach what a suffix is.
“A suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to create a new word”.
Brainstorm a few with the children: friendly, letting, running, swapped, etc.
Children play the Suffix Sea game in groups of 2 - 4.
Children record the words they have made on the Suffix Sea sheet or in their spelling books.
Rotate groups if you wish - so that they have a chance to use each board & add different suffixes. They can rotate and just record on their own sheets.

Grade 2:
For practicing the 1-1-1 Doubling Spelling Rule! Students grab a wrapped bubble gum and bubble card and decide if they have to double the ending consonant before adding the suffix.
