Tensions on the Russian-Ukrainian border have heightened and recently reached a boiling point. As of February 22nd the Russian military have mobilized 75% of their forces into Ukrainian territory. This is a frightening sight to many; I have interviewed over 15 students at David T Howard middle school and before this mobilization, and a whopping 93% of them thought that Russia would invade Ukraine by the end of the year, and another 80% percent of them thought that there would be an armed conflict of mass proportion in their lifetime, but the golden question remains: “Is this an invasion?” There are a few different theories discussing this matter, but first why does Russia want to invade Ukraine? It is simple Russia wants to reclaim land from Ukraine that is historically theirs, they also want access to the Black Sea for oil production.
Now that we have covered why Russia wants to claim Ukrainian land, is this a full on invasion of the country or just a mobilization of their forces? While some people still don’t believe that something like this could happen, the vast majority agrees that this IS an invasion of Ukrainian territory. If you need any more information to convince you, CNBC says that “Ukraine to impose state of emergency, tells citizens to leave Russia” while President Joe Biden alsos states that this is “the beginning of a Russian invasion” he and the UN also are planning to impose sanctions against Russia and punish them for this assault. In conclusion, Americans should take this situation seriously and not be blinded by disbelief that this could never happen, because it just did.
