Ramadan is known as the holiest month out of the whole year, according to Islam. Though, what is Ramadan?
Ramadan is a celebrated month in Islam practiced by Muslims, in which Muslims are prohibited from drinking or eating from sunrise to sunset. It is celebrated because that is when the founder of the religion, Muhammad, received texts of the holy Islamic text, known as the Koran or Quran. Another reason it’s celebrated to receive similar feelings to people that are unable to put food in their mouths.
During Ramadan, there is much more than just Muslims being unable to eat or drink during the day. It is also a month where Muslims are encouraged to refrain from bad behavior, such as lying or cursing. Not only that, it is considered a month in which rituals should be practiced daily.
The word Ramadan simply defines as “The ninth month of the Islamic calendar”. They chose that name because, during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan begins.
As of 2021, Ramadan will begin at sundown of April 12th, and Muslims will start to start to fast the next day (the 13th) at sunrise.
Exceptions to fasting during the month include people who are sick, the elderly, and people who are traveling.
Special prayers are given during this month as well. Eid is then celebrated at the end of the month. The celebration includes spending time with family and friends, munching on sweets and snacks, and receiving gifts and/or money!
To all, I wish you a very blessed Ramadan!
