Christmas trees are a big part of many people’s Christmas traditions. Many people have taken to buying artificial trees to be reused each year, but some still hold fast to old traditions and buy their trees from a Christmas tree farm or lot. The first Christmas tree retail lot in the United States started in 1851 in New York by Mark Carr. There are some questions as to what the benefit of buying a live tree is. Some research shows that Christmas trees remove dust and pollen from the air and that an acre of Christmas trees provides for the daily oxygen requirements of 18 people. While some families are all for live trees and others prefer an artificial tree here are some statistics from a study conducted in 2002 to show how exactly the US is divided. In 2002, 21% of United States households had a real tree, 48% had an artificial tree and 32% had no tree. So quite a few Americans are getting a tree each year whether it’s live or fake- which leads you to wonder where they are getting them.
Many people who buy artificial trees purchase them at large retail stores like Target or Walmart and they typically buy these in person although they can also be purchased online. For the people who want real trees they are typically bought in person in tree lots or on tree farms. However, surprisingly enough, more than 330,000 real Christmas trees are sold via e-commerce or catalogs. Since the number of people who get christmas trees each year is sky-high it has turned into quite a marketing and economic thing as well. In 2002, 21% of Christmas trees sold were from chain stores; 16% by non-profit groups; 22% from retail lots and 35% from choose and cut farms. This year, because of the covid-19 pandemic, the last percentage of people who go to choose and cut farms has and will continue to go way up. Many families are deciding to cut their own trees because it’s an activity that’s fun and can safely be done outside following all the coronavirus pandemic guidelines. So many families are going to be making getting their christmas tree an activity. Buying at a local choose and cut farm or tree lot is a great way to have some fun and support a small business!
