Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down is one of the best literary works of the 21st century. It begins when the main character, a kid with big aspirations who questions his own existence. He believes that the things that happen to him are too strange and bizarre to be real. This means that the character has remarkable insight. This is also a comment that not many people would actually catch. The only issue is that instead of thinking that he is in a book, he thinks that he is the main character of a reality TV show. However, he was close.0
Then, the intelligent, young character reminisces about the fact that he was once an aspiring poet. He even had one of his works published in a prestigious poetry book. In his early years, he learned basic speech patterns before anyone in his group. He also expresses his jealousy of people trying to be non-competitive nowadays. He believes that if you play terribly in a sport or other competitive event, you should not get a trophy. He believes that parents are trying to not upset anyone, but that isn’t how the real world works and gives a lasting impression of thinking that you always get what you want when you want it. This shows the author’s cunning inclusion of philosophy in an otherwise comedic book.
Then, the author begins his criticism of 21st century literature. He begins by using satire of Halloween books that are repulsive repeats. See that nice use of alliteration? I’m paying attention in ELA. Anyway the main character shows that he was able to cheat the system in school and get 100 percent on each book report by using the bad Halloween books. What a good student. He is also saying that if he is lucky, he will use a cryo-chamber to see the future. That is very intelligent. I don’t think that anyone else could ponder that.
The narrator then begins to talk about his family’s absurd Halloween decorations. He talks about a deafening witch. It would go off from the drop of a napkin from across the house. Sometimes it would even go off without any noise at all. And sometimes, it would go off without batteries in it. He then goes into a monologue about respecting animals for some odd reason. What a responsible human being who cares about the environment. He should join PITA.
Since he figures that he won’t go trick-or-treating, he decides to enter this balloon-flying contest. The free prize was a giant jar of candy-corn. Candy-corn is terrible, however our protagonist was probably desperate. He constructed a well made narrative about the balloon project and put the note on his balloon. Then, he went into talking about school antics. Then, he provided reliable insight to the meaning of dreams.
The lucky kid to find his balloon was an antisocial weirdo. They invited him over to the protagonists’ house, and he had never played a video game before because he went crazy for some reason. Then, the protagonist ventured into the antisocial weirdo’s house. Then he tried to play with Legos, but accidentally “stole” them. The weirdo then accused him of stealing the balloon, but luckily the protagonist snatched the balloon he had before leaving.
The protagonist was being forced to do extra chores because his mom made a “Chore Bag” because she was going to get a master’s degree. When the protagonist achieved the candy corn, he found out that the pig that they owned for some reason ate all of the candy.`Then, he and Rodrick tried to get the pig to the vet, but failed miserably. Then, his mom punished him for lying. Then, he reminisces on a past lie that he told from when he was in 1st grade. What a good memory. He also tells him about lies that his family told him over the years.
The protagonist now talks about the good jobs he wants like an advanced sanitation worker, or a highly-qualified video game tester extraordinaire. He also says that his family was very bright, and his uncle once sawed off a part of a tree that he was sitting on. He then says that his brother wanted to attend a dog college. However, he decided to study a psychology book. And then he became so good at it that he was able to teach a college student.
Then, the protagonist and his friend decided to make a movie that probably would’ve gotten an Oscar. He and his friend debated and debated and eventually came to a consensus. This shows the teamwork qualities of both of them. Then, he made his friend play all of the best parts. Eventually, a mishap happened with the fire-department and his friend got put on a lot of morning talk shows, and the protagonist got nothing. The theme of the book is to be satisfied with what you have and not go chasing after things.
