The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Now this is a classic movie I feel everyone has heard about or even quoted a few times saying things like, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore but it really is a marvel of the 20th century. Beginning the movie in sepia tones then shifting to color was something uncommon in the 1930s. In the story a young girl named Dorthy Gale goes on a magical journey through the wondrous land of Oz meeting many friends on her journey.
Dracula (1931)
Speaking of a name we’ve all heard before either in your history books about Vlad the Impaler, or in modern media in costumes talking about the vampire king Dracula. This was one of the first horror movies that sent shivers down people’s spines. The film was about a vampire who lived in a castle and began turning many young women into vampires. The vampire hunter Van-Helsing is also there to put a stop to Dracula's viciousness. It is a very nice film to watch.
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)
Don’t you just love your aunts? The people who might take care of you or spoil you rotten. Well in this film you might wanna check the candy your aunts are handing you! In this movie, we follow the story of a lovely couple newly wed going to their Aunt Abby and Aunt Martha’s home to relax and take a break. They learn though that the aunts have been creating their own brew to kill unfortunate people who are lonely or sad with their lives.
Fantasia (1940)
Disney, the company that has become so engraved into our heads, had quite an early beginning. In 1940 the film Fantasia came out and really showed the marvel of Disney’s animation capabilities. With an array of all hand-drawn animation. Along with the beautiful music of Fantasia, it’s overall an incredible experience I find many will enjoy.
Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
In this movie James Dean played almost an Outsiders type of character. In the movie he plays a bit of a troublemaker in a new suburban town. This is where he meets the young woman named Judy who he falls for and he forms a steel tight bond with a kid named Sal. This is a very good flick and I entirely recommend it.
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
When I was about eight years old I watched this movie with my father and fell in love almost immediately. It involves an aging starlet, a naive script writer, a powerful women not being swayed by the script writers manipulation, and also involves a murder most fowl. In all this movie has mystery, action, and a spectacular storyline.
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1963)
If you’ve ever heard the song “Bette Davis Eyes” you will most likely know a little bit about this movie. It was quite controversial for the two main actors of the movie Joan Crawford and Bette Davis to be paired up since they were mortal enemies. In all though they both created one of the greatest thriller films of all time. It’s about an aging child star who goes insane and her sister has to feel the weight of the insane child star.
The Sound of Music (1965)
This is also another story that has been shown in the media many times. With songs with lyrics like “Doe, a deer, a female deer.” That though is not the only reason this movie is amazing. With stunning camera work and beautiful music it shapes this movie into a beautiful one. A true work of art.
