As we know, school can be stressful. It’s different for everyone. For some, it might be the assignments that trigger panic, while for others it might be the chaotic schedule. Stress is different for everyone, but there are many techniques you can use to deal with school stress in positive ways.
Most people (including myself) know that school can be stressful, boring, idiotic, or all three. Everyone knows school is supposed to be a safe learning place, but sometimes, for some students, it can seem like a day with the devil. One reason for this is because of bullying, which can also cause stress. The problem with bullying isn’t that it isn’t known of, it’s that it’s not dealt with in a good way.
Let’s take this example. You're riding the bus waiting for your best friend to get on. You decided to surprise her and got on early. Suddenly your school-famous bus bully gets on the bus. As you wait for your friend, he suddenly makes eye contact with you. You make eye contact back, thinking it’ll scare him off. Then he comes at you and chokes you. You're scared, you don’t know what to do, and you start questioning even coming on the bus early.
That was a true experience for my best friend. Luckily, she is fine and well. But this is what I mean. Anti-bullying policies aren’t in full effect. Bullying is one of the problems and causes the most school stress.
Another reason for school stress is an overload of work and problems with balancing time between activities. It can be extremely difficult to manage your time and still allow yourself to relax. In my mind, there is really no easy solution to this. However, it does help to consistently check your assignments and evaluate the ways you’re spending your time to determine whether they’re the most efficient and healthy method to get work done.
School stress is a hard thing to get past, and I still have a lot of trouble keeping myself calm. Hopefully, however, identifying the problem has helped you tackle a solution to it. There are many ways to do this. For starters, try thinking about when you're most stressed and where you’re at that specific time. Study hall? Math class? Tardy-bell just went off? You now know what the problem is, well...not exactly. You know where the problem is. Now, try to locate exactly what it is you're doing. Homework? Studying for a test? Trying to keep your emotions under control while a bully picks a fight with you? After this, do your best to identify the best course of action.
Remember that you can’t be perfect. It’s okay if one assignment doesn’t earn the grade you hoped it would. It’s okay to be late to class one time. If this happens, accept it and move on.
Or maybe it’s the teacher you don’t like. You feel like he or she dislikes you for no reason. Trust me, they probably don’t. They may just have a different view of things. They may think their actions are appropriate while you may think the opposite. Other times, they may get frustrated with you, but remember this. It’s not their job to like you, it's their job to teach you. Once you learn that, you’ll be okay.
All in all, there are different reasons for school stress. The best way is to find out what is stressing you out, and then dealing with it. You don’t have to do it alone. Maybe a friend or sibling could help you. And remember this - life is going to be filled with ups and downs. It’s your job to push through them.
