One of David T. Howard’s most celebrated club is the reading bowl, which is formulated around the Georgia Book Awards 6-8 Grade List (click here to view). Contestants read the 10 listed books, which are altered every year, and participate in competitions where trivia questions about the books are asked. Team members press buttons on their provided buzzers when they know the answers to questions, and the first person to buzz in has the opportunity to answer. With a correct answer, the team earns 10 points. Reading bowl’s rules are a bit more complex than that, but that’s a basic overview.
At the beginning of this year’s virtual reading bowl, the interest rate was low. There were only three people who regularly attended meetings every Thursday afternoon, but due to the exemplary coaching of Ms. Ortega and Ms. Hurt, both ELA teachers at D.T. Howard, the team quickly gained knowledge of the books. Their first tournament was held on January 20, and the team emerged victorious, taking second place and moving on to the Metro-Regional competition on February 20. The team is extremely grateful to their coaches for making this possible. Between these competitions, interest was increased, and more team members were introduced to the game.
On February 20, the David T. Howard team competed against eleven other teams and took sixth place. It did not qualify to move on to the state tournament, so the group decided to form a book club, reading and discussing volumes of their choice. The team first read We Were Liars by E. Lockhart and are now in the midst of Three Act Tragedy by Agatha Christie.
Reading bowl is a widely loved club that has brought readers together and formed wonderful friendships. To quote Mariam Darb, a team member: “I really adore Reading Bowl. Everyone in the club is so sweet and basically a second family to me. We can talk about any topic, and at the end we always shared a few laughs.” I hope that more students will consider joining the club whenever possible.
