There is a game made in 2015 called Undertale. It sold 2.7 million copies (not that it should’ve). It was made by Toby Fox (not many people know this but his real name is Robert. It’s really hidden in the files of Undertale and somehow someone got deep into the archives of his Earthbound Halloween Hack which I do not recommend looking up or watching). He used to call himself “FwugRadiation,” “Radiation,” and “Dog-burgle” on the internet. Apparently it was inspired by Earthbound, and OFF (video-game) (much better games). To me this game was overrated and I only played it because a friend recommended it to me and the Fandom. It relies way too much on “the power of friendship,” has poor graphics, horrible characters, and the songs only took about 20 minutes to make on a small keyboard using free samples in a basement. I will admit it took a lot of effort to make because only 1 person coded it, and a single thing you do could affects the rest of your gameplay. The trailers were horrible though, especially the Nintendo Switch one. Matter of fact I would not have even played the game had I seen those trailers.
The game has nine different neutral routes. Not to mention a “True Pacifist route where you do not kill anything and befriend every character. The point of the game is not to kill anything, which takes the fun out of RPGs. This means you cannot grind enemies for levels. Also, if anything this game is making killing video game characters into a big deal by calling the route where you kill enemies much worse by calling it a “Genocide Run”. The final boss of that run is a fat lazy skeleton named after a font. This game is unbalanced because the Genocide Run is very hard to complete and everything else is easy.
Another reason that people like the game is because of the characters. If you ask me, all of the characters are horrible because there is way too much background information about them. The main characters are Flowey/Asriel, Toriel, Asgore, Undyne, Sans, Papyrus, Frisk, Mettaton, and Alphys.
Frisk is the main character that you have to play as. The first thing wrong is the name. Why is a character named that? The second thing is that he is hard to even look at. Also, Frisk may be the slowest character (besides Monster Kid). I think that the main reason the game takes about 7 hours to complete (True Pacifist run), is because of the speed Frisk walks at.
Flowey is the annoying little flower you meet at the beginning of the game. Also the main antagonist. He tricks you by telling you to run into his so called “friendliness pellets” so he could share some LOVE. Now I know that it was a trick but, I would not start out a game with a talking flower telling you he wants to share LOVE through friendliness pellets. That’s just cringy. He also makes a few Mcdonald’s references such as his voice acted lines all apparently being from 1960’s Mcdonalds commercials such as when he says, “that’s a wonderful idea,” and his groan when you start to hit him in the neutral run, is sped up from a 1960s Mcdonalds commercial. Lastly, in the Undertale file dump there is an unused file of him saying “triple” from another 1960s Mcdonalds commercial. I don’t even know how this guy found out about these ads. He probably used to work at McDonalds to be honest.
Toriel is the goat lady who stops Flowey from tricking you in the beginning of the game. She lets Frisk into her home and has prepared books for your curriculum and bakes him a pie. Why would you let Frisk into your home!? Other than that she isn’t really too much of a problem. Except for the fact that she named a chair “Chairiel.”
Sans is a lazy skeleton to whom Flowey refers to as a “Smiley Trashbag”. He lives in Snowdin Town with his brother Papyrus (yes it snows in the underground, I do not know how that’s possible.) He is a comic relief character. He tells horrible jokes like when his brother Papyrus told him that he hasn’t done a lot of work, he says “I have done a ton, a skeleTON.” He sometimes tries to be funny even though no one wants him to, such as when he invites you to lunch at Grillby’s, he says “it’s on you, the bill is 10000 g. will you pay it?” (The skeleton only talks in lowercase and comic sans.) When you say no he says, “i’m kidding i’ll pay” (or something like that). For some reason he is the strongest character in the game. I do not know why but he is. I guess the game designer was just lazy with character design.
Mettaton is a robot monster. He is a conceited TV show host. He thinks he is special and wants to get to the surface so he can perform in front of humans. The issue is that he is the number one and ONLY star. I’m pretty sure that the only reason people watch his shows is because he is their only source of entertainment (yes there is electricity down there. The CORE is the power source). He has this resort called MTT. If that is supposed to be short for Mettaton shouldn’t that be MTTT? Moving on, he is annoying because in Hotland when you are trying to get to ASGORE’S (it’s capitalized because that’s how everyone says it in the game) castle, he makes you participate in his little “shows” like the bomb deactivation, the jetpack cooking show thing, and the quiz game show. Alphys made Mettaton’s final form to impress ASGORE so he would make her the royal scientist. During his fight one way to spare him is by getting his ratings up to 10,000 or more. Something was definitely rigged during that because I did a count and there are 322 monsters total.
Alphys. Alphys. Alphys. She is a screw-up. It was not necessary to have her in the game. She likes this dumb anime called “Kissy Kissy Mew Mew. Apparently there is a real anime called “Mew Mew Power” don’t ask me how or why that reference is in the game. “I don’t eat anime. It is not good for your health.”-JeromeASF. Listen to JeromeASF. She staged the whole Mettaton section, just so the not-so-bright protagonist Frisk would become her only friend. It is sad that she needed to do a whole giant scame just to be friends with Frisk of all people. What a loser. She honestly should not have been the royal scientist because she was trying to try this DETERMINATION extract experiment and it was a big fail. When she tested it (yes this is a cringy game) it ultimately failed. Since it was a big OOF, she hid because people had questions about what happened. If you do the true pacifist route you have to give her courage to tell the truth (more cringe). She wants to tell Frisk the truth first so you have to enter the true lab. The elevator malfunctions and you have to find the hidden keys (I do not know why the keys are hidden in the first place) in a creepy area with a lot of scary beasts and let me just say that this was all a joke. The scariest thing in there, however, was Alphys herself. This was just so Alphys could say the punchline “they get sassy when they haven’t been fed.” Luckily she gets fired at the end of True Pacifist (not that it matters because the monsters are all on the surface.)
That’s about all of the problem characters. Another issue I have is the fandom. I know that this does not necessarily have anything to do with the game itself, but that fandom is toxic. Once a youtuber did a genocide run first, and the fandom said “no you’re not getting the full experience”, “that’s not what the game is really like”. Genocide isn’t any different than pacifist except for the fact that you kill things like in any other game. That’s just like saying in Mario “oh no do not jump on the Goombas head”. “They post cringy comments on youtube videos. They also make these weird AU’s (alternate universes) such as Ink Sans, Overfell, and Underswap. They are also making weird animatics like Megalovania animation. Lastly they make fan made songs like Megalo Strike Back lyrics which by the way isn’t even an Undertale song. It’s from “I Miss You Earthbound 2012 album”. I don’t know who started that.
Now we need to talk about the creator of the game, Toby Fox, a.k.a. Robert Fox, a.k.a. FwugRadiation, a.k.a. The Annoying Dog (what he calls himself inside UNDERTALE.). He has a lot of aliases. Lets just call him “The Fwug” for now. The Fwug used to live inside a friends’ basement when he was coding most of UNDERTALE. He scammed people out of 51,000 dollars with a Kickstarter that he did not need to make. Speaking of money, he probably made 13 million dollars off of UNDERTALE.
After 5 years, he now only has 2 million. He spent over 2 million dollars per year, even though he knew that he would never make another UNDERTALE. He worked on the music Homestuck (a weird webtoon) when he was 16, even though he was probably not old enough to do so. He was banned from the forums when he was 16 for posting a song called “The Baby Is You,” (Please do not look this up.) He then had the audacity to put part of this song in “Pokemon Sword and Shield” for the “Battle Tower Theme.” After he had a weird dream about jesters, playing cards, hammers, anti-social smurfs, a violent Barney the Dinosaur, and a Harry-Potter Grinch, he decided to make the game called “Deltarune.” He then canceled this and started working on UNDERTALE instead. He actually did post “Deltarune Chapter 1” for free in 2018 after UNDERTALE got popular. Then, he decided to hire a team to work on the sequels. He said that the sequels “Might-may or may not be rated Teen.” When someone asked him when the game would come out, he said and I quote, ”Sorry bud, it’ll be out when it’s ready.” If you look his picture up online, you see many different variations of him. They all look the same, but slightly different. Sometimes, he looks like an escaped felon. Others, he looks like a conceited person. He is a confirmed basement-dweller, as he lived in Andrew Hussie’s (the creator of Homestuck) basement as an adult out of college. He majored in environmental science.
Last but not least, here are some questions I have about the game: How can it snow in the underground? How did any of the 7 humans survive the fall if they fell off a mountain all the way down near the core of the Earth? How is the snow still there if it should be hot? What college did the Tems go to? Why does Sans drink ketchup? Why did Undyne break the #1 rule in every RPG, which is that when your HP drops to 0, you lose? This definitely is NOT the worst game out there, but there definitely were some things that needed to be pointed out. It is way too overrated. Thank you for reading!
