This issue of the Horn features a new recurring column called “Hear it on the Horn”. This column is inspired by a parlor game questionnaire popularized by French writer Marcel Proust. The “Proust Questionnaire” is also a feature of Vanity Fair magazine. Each issue of the Horn will pose 15 personality questions to a member of the David T. Howard Middle School faculty, student or staff. This publication we will be interviewing our amazing librarian, Sherry Neal
What talent do you wish you had? I really wish I could play guitar or drums! Who is one living person you most admire? I have always been a huge fan of Rosalynn Carter. What is your most marked characteristic? Hmmm... I had to ask my husband. He says: "intelligence, focus, intensity, concentration, and organization - a German word probably exists that expresses that" (because the Germans have lots of great words for complicated things like "schadenfreude") What is your favorite occupation? Librarian, obviously!! Who are your heroes in real life? I am always in awe of all the people who do hard jobs in service to others, like sanitation workers and janitors, and who get little recognition for all their work. Our society would stop running without them. What is the quality you most like in a person? I like people who think about things deeply and then enjoy talking about those thoughts. What character trait do you most dislike? tie between disingenuity and unreliability. What are your words or phrases that are most overused? "like" and "you know" and, when I'm not at school, words that aren't publishable in a middle school paper 😉. Where would you most like to live? At the beach on the Georgia coast. What is your most treasured possession? I try not to get too attached to things, but I am hopelessly attached to a necklace my daughter gave me. When I forget to put it on, I feel off all day. What are your most favorite writers? They change over time... Right now? Renee Watson, Jason Reynolds, Coleson Whitehead, Celia Perez, Neil Gaiman, Neal Stephenson, and always JRR Tolkien. Who is your favorite hero of fiction? When I was younger, I definitely would have picked Lucy Pevensie from the Narnia books, but now... I don't know. Which historical figure do you most identify with? I don't know if I'm like her, but I have always admired Lucy Stone. What is your motto? Have patience. All things are difficult before they become easy. (Saadi)
