On November 2, 2021 a new Mayor of Atlanta will be elected! Keisha Lance Bottoms has announced that she will be stepping down as mayor and will not be running. There are many candidates running this year, with five that are considered front runners. They all have different views and opinions on what needs to be done in this community. Here are these frontrunners:
Andre Dickens:
Andre Dickens was elected to a seat on the city council in November 2013. He is the chairman for the Transportation Committee, providing oversight of all city streets, bridges, etc. In his candidacy he has said he wants to help with affordable housing, educational opportunities, and public safety.
Antonio Brown:
Antonio Brown’s objectives for Atlanta include inspiring trust in public safety, affordable housing, and mobility for all. He grew up in poverty and dropped out of high school at age 15 to support his family. He was recently elected to his first term as a council member by just three votes. His campaign has new and different ideas for the city of Atlanta.
Felicia Moore:
Felicia Moore wants more for Atlanta; her goals for this community are safer neighborhoods, guaranteed city services, and transparency for how the city spends its money. She has lived in Atlanta for nearly 35 years and is currently the president of the city council.
Kasim Reed:
Kasim Reed was Mayor from 2010 to 2018 and is running on his experience from being mayor. He wants to get crime back in check, improve Atlanta’s transportation including roads and bike infrastructure , and increase opportunities for young people. As members of his previous administration have been charged with crimes, he aims to renew people’s trust in him.
Sharon Gay:
Sharon Gay is relying on her experience to help with affordable housing, reducing crime, and helping with the economic impact of the Covid-19. She has lived in Atlanta for 42 years. She is practiced in business and the law. She has worked in the mayor’s office and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.
If no candidate gets more than 50% percent of the vote, there is a runoff election between the top two vote-getters. This is how Kasim Reed won in 2010. Because there are so many candidates a runoff is expected, which would be scheduled for November 30th.
Atlanta needs a strong leader that can find long-lasting solutions to big problems like climate change and the cost of cars. For example, they need to promote transportation that does not use as much carbon and slow the streets. They can make homes closer to places that we need day today. I believe the Mayor of Atlanta needs to think about our generation and what we will need in the future in order to survive and thrive.
