Black History: We Strike Back
A poem to celebrate Black History Month
A poem to celebrate Black History Month
Black History. We strike the matches, burning in flames of light and darkness.
We’ve struck our matches and they will not burn out without a fight. Matches strike so strongly it takes an army to put them out.
Black History. Something to go down in history as we make history.
Standing up, Standing out.
Black History. Something no one can understand ____ unless they’ve lived it. Unless they are it.
We, Black Americans, struck that match. As the flame flickered we got strong ___ faster, better.
We struck the match as we struck back for freedom.
We struck the match as we fought for equal rights. But our fight, it’s not over.
Not yet, anyway.
Instead, we fight for the freedom to just be.
To be accepted, and more respected.
To be the ones who set the table, the ones who make the plans.
These are the goals of Black Americans.
These goals will be met. To anyone who doubts us ____ do not forget.
We Strike Back.
We light the match.
The flame burns brighter each and every day.
We strike the match.
And we won’t be losing any time soon ____ without a fight.
