There has been a new trend called “Devious Licks” here at David T. Howard. The school recently found out this was happening when a boys locker room was found torn apart with doors lying on the floor. The trend was started by one person with the username “jugg4elias” on TikTok. On September 1st, 2021, they posted a video showing them stealing a box of masks with the caption “1 Month Into School….Devious Lick.”
Following this trend, someone at David T. Howard stole a soap dispenser. That's when the school administrators found out what was really happening. After this incident occurred, people were no longer allowed to go to the restroom alone without adult supervision. This new rule has caused a lot of negative feelings from the students. One student said, ”It's really irritating. You have to ask teachers to unlock the bathroom for you. You can't go during locker breaks, and you can't go during the first and last ten minutes of class, so there's not really a time when you can go without missing class.”
Another student commented, ”At first, it just seemed like a funny TikTok trend. But then when it started happening at my own school, it became less funny. It's so unfair that the whole school is being punished for what a few people did.”
Various other schools have also been taking action by threatening serious consequences to students who participate in the trend.
This TikTok trend hit Bartow High School in Florida on September 16, 2021. School Resource Officers were informed of damage to the boys restrooms on school grounds. A local teenager who attends the school stole two soap dispensers and is now facing juvenile detention. In a statement, the 15 year old boy announced he did the trick to look “cool” to his friends.
David T. Howard delivered this message on September 17, 2021 at 2:54 pm EST saying, “Parents, we have been experiencing the impact of a new social media TikTok challenge called “Devious Licks“ at our school. We had two boys restroom stall doors removed and left on the restroom floor, numerous restroom sink push buttons removed and taken and several soap as well as paper towel dispensers removed and taken. We have reported this to our School Resource Officers as this classifies as theft of school property that must be replaced.”
Police across the U.S are beginning to arrest or even send people to court for their actions. Vandalism in Kentucky got so bad that eight juveniles were charged in an offence related to this outrageous TikTok trend. Now, four of them are getting charged with theft. Schools around the country are emailing or texting parents about the vandalism and theft at the school and asking them to tell their children about the consequences of stealing.
After a couple weeks of this trend, TikTok is now shutting it down. They plan on doing this by removing the hashtag (#devious #deviouslicks #licks) and videos that promote stealing or vandalism. Things have gotten so bad TikTok is now banning people from the app if they chose to participate.
