10. Displacement

Outcomes:

> Research and design a practical investigation.

> Carry out preliminary experiment(s) to help inform the design of an experiment.

Summative Skills Assessment

Criteria B & C

Research, design, carry out, process and evaluate a quantitative investigation of the metal reactivity series in displacement reactions.

Research Problem: How can we maximise the cost efficiency of extracting copper metal from copper sulfate solutions?

Research: Carry out some preliminary experiments using the materials provided and your initial research.

Criteria B

Research and Design:

i. explain the problem to be tested.

ii. formulate and explain a testable hypothesis using the correct scientific reasoning.

iii. explain how to manipulate the variables, and explain how sufficient, relevant data will be obtained.

iv. design a logical, complete and safe method in which you select appropriate materials and equipment.

Hypothesis:

What could be your testable hypothesis for this investigation?

> can you explain your hypothesis using the correct scientific reasoning?

Variables:

What will be your:

> Independent variable?

> Dependent variable?

> Control variables?

What relevant data will you collect?

Remember the Research Problem:

"How can we maximise the cost efficiency of extracting copper metal from copper sulfate solutions?"

How will you ensure that you collect sufficient data?

Results:

What will your results table look like?

Criteria C

Processing and evaluating:

i. correctly collect, organize, transform and present data in numerical and/ or visual forms

ii. accurately interpret data and explain results using correct scientific reasoning

iii. evaluate the validity of a hypothesis based on the outcome of a scientific investigation

iv. evaluate the validity of the method based on the outcome of a scientific investigation

v. explain improvements or extensions to the method that would benefit the scientific investigation.

Conclusion:

What does your data tell you is the best way to:

"maximise the cost efficiency of extracting copper metal from copper sulfate solutions?"

Can you explain your results using correct scientific reasoning (don't forget to cite your scientific reasoning)?

Materials:

    • 1.0 M CuSO4 solution

    • 1.0 M FeSO4 solution

    • 1.0 M ZnSO4 solution

    • Copper metal

    • Iron Metal

    • Zinc Metal

    • Aluminium Metal

    • Magnesium Metal

Method:

Design a logical, complete and safe method in which you select appropriate materials and equipment.

Processing:

How will you process and present your quantitative and qualitative data?

(Remember, you only have to show your working for each type of calculation once, the rest of the time you can just show your answer)

> Can you represent your results/data using a chart?

For the sake of this investigation we will assume that the cost of sulfuric acid used to make the copper sulfate is zero.

You only have to concentrate on the cost of the metal that displaces the copper and the amount of copper made.

Evaluation:

Based on your conclusion, evaluate the hypothesis you made.

Based on your conclusion, evaluate the validity of the method you used to carry out the experiment.

>>> What improvements could you make to the method that would benefit the scientific investigation?
