01. Travelling light

How does light travel?

Activity - complete the two diagrams by drawing rays of light on them in the appropriate places

Activity - Investigating shadows

Q: What affects the size of a shadow?

You can investigate the variables that could affect the size of a shadow using a lamp, a piece of card and a screen

Variables that you could investigate include:

· the size of the card

· the distance between the ray box and the card

· the distance between the ray box and the screen

· the distance between the card and the screen.

Write a plan for your investigation. Remember to:

· say which variable you are going to investigate

· say which variables you are going to keep the same

· predict how changing your variable will affect the shadow, and give a scientific reason for your prediction (Hint: Drawing accurate scale diagrams will help you to make a prediction)

· describe how you are going to carry out your experiment

· explain how you will keep yourself and others safe while you are working

· explain how you will make your results as accurate and reliable as possible

· say what you are going to record as your results and how you are going to record them

· say how you will display your results

· say how you will make sure that you have enough results to draw a conclusion.

Can you...

> plan and carry out a fair investigation

> make a prediction using scientific ideas
