13. Where do you build it?

Outcomes:

- Recognise that building factories causes differences of opinion.

- make a reasoned argument for and against other people's opinions.

When a new chemical factory is built, we need to think carefully about the best site. Things that have to be considered include:

• transport – bringing the raw materials in and getting the products out.

• labour – will the people who work at the factory be able to get there easily?

• safety – what if something goes wrong?

• pollution – this could include chemical pollution, noise and the look of the factory.

To make sulphuric acid you need sulphur or iron sulphide as a raw material. Both of these have to be brought in to Britain from other countries.

Look at the map.

1. Would you say that this area could be a good one to build a factory to make sulphuric acid?

Explain your reasons.

2. Which of the four sites A, B, C or D would you say is the best? Explain your reasons as fully as you can. Refer back to the key points at the top of this sheet. You should make a table for each site using the key points as your headings.

Homework:

Prepare for tomorrow's test on acids & alkalis by reviewing the summary sheet and the key word sheet that have been posted on Managebac.

You can also revise by looking at what we have done in your science books and what is on the science website.
