05. Heating Cu
What happens when we heat copper metal in air?
This video shows copper metal (Cu) reacting with sulfur (S) to make copper sulfide (CuS)
Activity: Reacting Copper metal with oxygen
Procedure:
a Fold the copper foil into an envelope as shown in the diagram.
b Weigh the envelope and record the mass.
c Wear eye protection and light the Bunsen burner.
d Hold the envelope in the tongs and heat strongly in the Bunsen flame for 5 minutes. You will need to have the air hole fully open.
e Place the envelope on the heat resistant mat and allow to cool. This will take a few minutes.
f Weigh the envelope and record the mass
g Open the envelope and compare the inside to the outside surface.
