04. Osmosis

Osmosis is the spontaneous net movement of solvent molecules through a semi-permeable membrane into a region of higher solute concentration, in the direction that tends to equalize the solute concentrations on the two sides. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osmosis)

Experiment #1:

•Take 3 2cm3 of beetroot and 3 small beakers

•Fill each beaker to the 100cm3 line with the water provided.

•In one of the beakers slowly add salt stirring all the time till no more salt will dissolve, label it salt.

•In another beaker do the same this time using sugar.

•The third beaker should be just water.

•Weigh each beetroot cube, record the mass and which solution you are placing them in in your book.

•Place the cubes in the solution and wait.

Experiment #2: Egg osmosis

What happens to the egg when it is placed into the following liquids?

-Pocari sweat

-Soybean oil

-Distilled water

-Tap water

-Honey

-Corn syrup

-Salt water
