07. How do we name compounds?

The name and formula of a compound tell us what it is made from, for example, sodium chloride is made from sodium and chlorine. Why does the name finish in chloride when it is made from chlorine? The ide means on its own. So the name "potassium fluoride" tells us it is made from potassium and fluorine only, the formula is KF.

So what about potassium chlorate, here we have the suffix ate, this means that there is oxygen as well. Potassium chlorate is made from potassium, chlorine and oxygen, the formula is KClO3.

Remember: the data sheet we use in lessons and during tests has a table of common ions on it that will help you write formulas.

Activity: Cut out the cards on w/s "Naming Substances 1" and match the names to the formulas

Use your answers from this activity to fill out the table on "Naming Substances 2"

Using that table and your periodic table, complete w/s "Word Equations 1 & 2"
