00. Recap bonding

Lesson Outcomes:- To recap the differences between elements, compounds and mixtures.- To review the differences between ionic, covalent and metallic bonding by looking at specific examples and explaining their properties.

Activity: Use the M&Ms provided to make models that represent the arrangement of atoms in an element, a compound and a mixture. For each one you need to be able to justify and explain your model.

Activity: In groups of 3 you must revise, research and explain the type of bonding and the general properties of the following three substances:

    • Magnesium, Mg

    • Sodium oxide, Na2O

    • Carbon dioxide, CO2

For each summary:

    1. Name the type of bonding present,

    2. Show the structure (bonding) of the substance,

    3. State the general properties of the substance;

      • Appearance,

      • Melting point,

      • Hardness,

      • Electrical conductivity (when solid),

      • Solubility in water,

      • Electrical conductivity (when dissolved).

    4. Explain how the type of bonding causes the properties.
