Mrs. Loretta Sharp, an elementary teacher from 1937 to 1967, was the creator of the DeWitt High School fight song. Active and athletic herself, she advocated for young girls to participate in sports. At DeWitt, she started girls’ basketball and the Girls’ Glee Club. In 1940, at the onset of World War II and before U.S. involvement, Sharp saw the need to write a school song in hopes of creating some unity in times of global uncertainty. Her brilliance in writing lyrics, combined with her piano playing ability, resulted in a timeless and original classic. It has become a tradition for DHS athletic teams to sing the fight song after games and on return bus trips, win or lose. Sharp’s masterpiece still has a lasting effect nearly a century later.
