With several returners back from a 19-2-3 squad in 2009, Coach Jamal Mubarakeh knew that he had a talented team entering the season. After falling short of winning the league title, the girls were motivated to make a post-season run. DeWitt completed the regular season in style, bringing home the program’s first-ever CAAC Gold Cup Championship with a 2-0 victory over Williamston. After beating Okemos and #7 ranked Haslett in the first two rounds, the girls had beaten arguably the area’s three top teams in a span of seven days. The Panthers entered the state tournament ranked #10 in the state. After taking out Eaton Rapids and #8 ranked Mason to win a district title, DeWitt crushed Parma Western 6-0 in the regional semi-final round. Dominating at both ends of the field, they did not allow a single shot on goal. Two days later, the Panthers beat #4 ranked Plainwell 3-0 to capture the program’s first-ever Division II Regional Championship and a berth in the state semi-finals. Sadly, the girls’ dreams for a state title were cut short with a heart-breaking 1-0 loss to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern in overtime. The team finished with an outstanding 20-3-1 record, and that incredible season started an impressive run of three straight regional titles and motivated young girls all across DeWitt to live up to a new standard of excellence.
