1993 Boys Baseball

DeWitt baseball brought home the program’s second state championship, the school’s ninth, in 1993 under the direction of head coach Frank Deak.  The Panthers, led by seven starting seniors, entered the season as the favorite in the Ingham County League after the team finished with a 31-3 record and a district championship the year before.  DeWitt dominated league play with a perfect 13-0 record before entering post-season play.  In district action, the Panthers defeated Lansing Catholic Central 9-2, Mason 4-2, and Haslett 10-1 to capture the Class B District Championship.  The Panthers knocked off #1 ranked Wyoming Park 5-0 in the regional semi-final and beat Ionia 9-3 for the regional title.  The Panthers battled back to secure a come-from-behind win, beating Essexville Garber 5-3 in quarterfinal action to advance to Battle Creek, site of the state semi-finals and finals, where they defeated Grand Rapids Northview 5-2.  DeWitt completed its dominating season in the longest championship game on record with an 11-inning walk-off win against Carleton Airport 4-3, crowning the 38-3 Panthers with the Class B State Championship.  The team’s 38 wins was the fourth highest in state history.  This Panther team set five school records for wins (38), winning streak (33), hits (298), RBI (368), and batting average (.388).
