Mike Ashley

Mike Ashley, a 1970 DeWitt graduate, earned 13 varsity letters in football, basketball, wrestling, baseball, and track.  In football, he was a four-year starter who earned All-Central Michigan Athletic Conference (CMAC) honors all four seasons.  His quiet leadership helped turn around a struggling program to build a CMAC championship team that finished 9-0 his senior year, the best record in school history.  As a senior linebacker, he posted two 20-tackle games, averaged 16 tackles per game (thirty percent of the team’s total), and finished with eight interceptions.  His outstanding season earned him Class C All-State by the Associated Press (AP), only the second DeWitt football player to receive the honor at that time.  He also received All-State recognition by the Detroit News and the United Press International (UPI).  He was part of CMAC championships in both wrestling and track.  As a three-year starter in baseball, he won two more CMAC championships and earned All-League honors as a senior.  He returned to his alma mater to serve as a volunteer assistant baseball coach in 1992.  Ashley used his quiet leadership style to build a rapport with players, helping to guide the baseball program to eight league championships, five district titles, four regional championships, two state runners-up, and the 1993 Class B State Championship before stepping aside in 2001.
