1977 Girls Softball

Some might say that the year 1977 put DeWitt High School on the map as a power to be reckoned with in athletics. Three Panther teams would win state championships before the year was complete, and the group that started it all was the DeWitt girls softball team. Despite finishing second in the Capital Circuit league that spring, their high powered offense and dominant pitching paved the way for a championship run. Averaging 13 runs a game over the course of the season, the 21-5 Panthers gained momentum for the state tournament, winning 13 of their final 14 regular season games. The Panthers stormed their way to the District Championship, outscoring their opponents by a combined total of 34-5. Their title run continued at the regional level in exciting fashion as DeWitt won an 11-inning battle with Whitmore Lake (3-2) before crushing Michigan Center (22-5) in the regional final. DeWitt then earned a berth in the Class C State Championship game with a 7-1 semi-final decision over Niles Brandywine. In the state championship game, DeWitt completed its impressive state tournament performance with a 12-5 victory over Centerline St. Clement to capture the Class C crown.
