Cody Grice

Cody Grice, a 2008 DeWitt graduate, earned five varsity letters in football and baseball.  As a hard-hitting linebacker, he led the football program to a 21-3 record, including consecutive undefeated Capital Area Activities Conference titles.  The Panthers captured a district and regional championship in 2006.  Grice earned All-League and All-State honors.  As an All-League, All-District, All-Region, and All-State performer in baseball, he earned the win in DeWitt’s first-ever Capital Diamond Classic Championship.  As a senior, he batted .439 and set a school record with seven triples.  He was the team’s Most Valuable Player and played in the East-West All-Star Game at Comerica Park.  Grice earned a scholarship to play at Grand Valley State University (GVSU), where he was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Freshman of the Year finishing with a .411 average and a league-leading .495 on-base percentage.  As a sophomore, he set a GVSU season record with a .455 average and set a school and GLIAC record with 100 hits in a season.  As a junior, he batted .381 and was among the league leaders in 17 different categories.  The three-time All-GLIAC and All-Midwest Region honoree added GLIAC and NCAA Division II Midwest Region Player of the Year awards, along with NCAA Division II All-American recognition.  Grice led the Lakers to two GLIAC Championships, two NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, and two NCAA World Series appearances.  He is among the school’s season leaders in 13 categories and is also among the GVSU career leaders in ten offensive categories, including a school record for career batting average of .418.  Grice chose to forgo his senior season when he was selected by the New York Yankees in the 12th round of the 2011 draft.  After a four-year career in professional baseball which culminated at the AAA level, he returned to GVSU to serve as an assistant coach for the Lakers.
