Christy Drayton, a 2003 DeWitt graduate, earned seven varsity letters in basketball and volleyball, receiving All-League, All Area and All-State honors in both sports. No individual player (male or female) won as many varsity basketball games (82) in a career. Over her four years, DeWitt finished 82-14, capturing four league titles, four district crowns and two regional championships while reaching the Class B Final Four twice. As a senior, she was selected to play in the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan All-Star Game. She also earned Academic All-State honors as both a junior and a senior. Drayton is the program’s all-time leader in steals and currently stands second in assists, although she held that mark for over a decade. As a standout setter in volleyball, her teams compiled a 122-25-17 record during her three varsity seasons. The two-time Lansing State Journal “Dream Team” selection was part of three league titles and three district crowns, leading the Panthers to the 2003 Class B Regional Championship. She finished her career with 3,175 assists, including a school record 1,136 assists during her senior year. Drayton raised the level of play of those around her and was DeWitt’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2003. In 2007, she returned to DeWitt to begin her career as a math teacher and coach. As an assistant coach on the varsity basketball team, Drayton played an important role on several more championship teams including another run to the Class B Final Four in 2009. She coached DeWitt’s junior varsity volleyball team for two seasons before becoming the varsity coach in 2008. During her 10-year coaching career, the Panthers posted an overall record of 404-91-8 that included nine league championships, seven district titles and three regional crowns. In 2017, her team made DeWitt’s first run to the Class A Final Four, where they lost to the eventual state champion, Novi. Drayton retired from coaching in 2018.
