Shane Martin

Shane Martin, a 2000 DeWitt graduate, earned a school record thirteen varsity letters and was a model of academic excellence for all student-athletes.  Although he participated in five different sports throughout high school, his wrestling career defined him most as an athlete.  As a four-time letter-winner, Martin finished his wrestling career with a school record 179 wins, a school record 54 wins in a season, an undefeated home match record, 84 career pins, four consecutive individual Ingham County League Championships, three team Most Valuable Players awards, and he placed in the top five in the state three times.  His teams won Class B District Championships in both 1997 and 1998.  He was recognized as a National Wrestling Coaches Association Academic All-American.  In addition to his record-setting wrestling career, Martin also competed in cross country, soccer, track, and golf.  In cross country, he earned three more varsity letters and was recognized as team Most Valuable Player twice.  In soccer, Martin earned two varsity letters and helped his team win a League Championship in 1999 and District Championships in 1998 and 1999.  Martin’s last four varsity letters came in track and golf.  He was named DeWitt’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2000.  Martin accepted a wrestling scholarship to Michigan State University where he continued to excel, earning two varsity letters.  At MSU, Martin’s highlight came in 2003 when he helped the Spartans defeat perennial wrestling power Iowa for the first time in 32 years en route to a final ranking of third in the nation.  He graduated from MSU with a 3.97 GPA, earning Academic All-Big Ten.  He was awarded the President’s Award in 2005 for a graduating male athlete with the highest GPA in the MSU Athletic Department.
