WYWLA CLASS OF 2024
How long were you at Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy?
I was at WYWLA for 4 years (9th-12th grade)
Why did you choose WYWLA? What were some things you had in mind to get out of WYWLA? Did you? Who were your biggest influences at WYWLA?
I chose WYWLA because I knew that it would make me college-ready, which has always been important. I also wanted to be in a place that challenged me academically and gave me strong leadership skills—which I felt WYWLA truly did. My Junior Civitan advisors, Mrs. Watkins, and Dr. Terry were my biggest influences because of their overwhelming support and belief in my ability to be a great leader and servant of my community. They always pushed me to be the best person I could be and I am and always will be eternally grateful to them.
What are some of the biggest lessons you learned at WYWLA?
WYWLA taught me the value of not only being a great student, but a leader and community member as well. Wherever I go, I make sure to fully dedicate and serve that community. I know that any gesture, big or small, can change the world–which I hope to do one small step at a time. I also learned the value of asking for help. I know that there is no shame in asking questions and exhausting every resource provided to me. Learning that there are always people in my corner was a great lesson.
What were you involved in during your high school years? What staff members championed you while at WYWLA? How?
I was involved in the Junior Civitan International Club in which I served as Secretary, President, Region Co-Director, and International Vice President. I also served as Vice President and Co-President of the Girls Learn International Club. Additionally, I was a member of the Student Government Association and National Honor Society. My club advisors, Mrs. Watkins, Dr. Terry, Ms. Wormald, and Mrs. Solomon were huge supporters of mine by providing me with the opportunities to serve and lead my community and grow into a better person through them. Mrs. di Carlo, was also an amazing support for me, especially in my senior year during college applications. In a season of my life that at times brought much worry, she was always there to provide a helping hand and a solution. I thank her for her guidance and patience.
Approximately how many college credits did you earn through our partnership with St. Augustine’s University?
I earned 54 credits
Why did you choose Nursing as your major? What is your career goal?
I chose Nursing because I have always been passionate about helping people. I come from a family of nurses, so I have always known how rewarded the field could be. I also wanted to find a way to connect my love of science, math, and interacting with people to a career, and nursing seemed like the best option. My goal is to get my Bachelors in Nursing and later on, get my Doctorate in Nursing Anesthesia to become a Nurse Anesthetist and concentrate in obstetrics.
What advice would you offer to our 6th grade OWLS, 9th grade OWLS, and our senior OWLS?
To the 6th grade OWLS, I would advise you to explore activities, clubs, and subjects you enjoy. Use the time you have to continue to discover the things you are passionate and curious about and make sure to devote yourself to them.
To the 9th-grade OWLS, build connections with your teachers and try to find ways that you can start to get involved in your community both at school and out. You may find that these bonds and commitments become the most rewarding of the next four years.
To senior OWLS: Enjoy these last couple of months with your classmates and teachers. I know that this can be a very stressful year, with so many things changing, but make sure to take it one step at a time. Make as many memories as possible.
What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, listening to music, cooking, watching TV shows and movies, and spending time with my friends and family. I also enjoy volunteering which I did a lot in high school through clubs and the Raleigh Dream Center, and here at Chapel Hill at the Newman Catholic Center.
What colleges did you apply to/get accepted? Why did you choose UNC-Chapel Hill?
I was accepted to UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Greensboro, East Carolina University, Campbell University, North Central University, Winston-Salem State University, and the University of Virginia. I chose Chapel Hill because it has a great nursing program that would provide me with an amazing education. I also loved that it was a big school and very community-focused.
How did high school prepare you for college?
High school helped improve my time management, studying, organizational, and collaborative skills which I use daily in college. I never really realized it until now, but all of the assignments, projects, and meetings were slowly preparing me for where I am now.
What is your impression of life at UNC-Chapel Hill thus far? How does it feel to be a Tar Heel?
UNC has been great so far. Although at times they are challenging, I enjoy my classes and feel that I am truly learning interesting topics. Since the campus is so big and has so many people, there are so many new places and activities to enjoy, through clubs or school functions. I love finding new places to study with friends and attending sporting events. Every day provides new experiences and I can honestly say that it feels amazing to be a Tar Heel!
