Spotlight on Students is a feature that showcases WYWLA students
and cool experiences they've had and/or recognitions received.
WYWLA senior, Brianna Miller, is captain of the Broughton High School Girls Varsity Tennis team. She is our Spotlight On Students recipient for November!
WYWLA senior, Brianna Miller, served as the 2023-24 Broughton High School Varsity Girls Tennis team captain. In interviewing Brianna, we found out she first started playing tennis at the age of six when her mother prompted her and her sister to play a sport- something they both could play for a lifetime. Well, Brianna loved it from the start and still does!
Brianna plays on the Kildaire Farm Racquet and Swim Club in Cary and on a United States Tennis Association Junior Team Tennis (a national junior tennis league). At Broughton High School, she started playing as a freshman on the junior varsity team. In her sophomore year she became the junior varsity team captain. In her junior year and this, her senior year, Brianna played on the varsity team. She is very humbled and proud to have been voted team captain by her teammates, which included WYWLA teammates Kaitlyn Hathaway and Maggie Fox. “It’s very exciting to be appreciated and recognized by my teammates”, said Brianna.
During Brianna’s senior year Broughton High School’s Girls Varsity Tennis team amassed a 15-1 record and claimed the CAP 6 4A Conference championship. Brianna’s personal record is 13-5. Both are amazing!
When asked why she loves tennis so much, she stated she loves it for many reasons. Among these is that while it is a team sport, it can also be an individual competition in which she feels accountable for her actions. Being responsible for every move is a big challenge and one that has built character. Tennis is such a dynamic and athletic sport that depends so much on strategy.
Brianna’s tennis idols include Serena Williams and Ben Shelton. Naomi Osaka was also mentioned due to her sports ability and dedication to mental health and well-being. After her senior year, Brianna hopes to continue playing tennis at the club or travel team in college. She is thankful for four years of being able to play a sport she loves at a high level and is appreciative of all the support received from family, WYWLA staff, friends, coaches, and teammates. A favorite quote of Brianna’s is “It’s not over, ‘til it’s over.” In other words, keep working towards your goals and on the tennis court, give it your all until you’ve exhausted everything. Congratulations on a great season, Brianna!
