ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL INTERN
What brought you to WYWLA?
When I came to visit, I saw a sense of community, togetherness, and leadership.
As an assistant principal intern looking for a place I specifically came to WYWLA because of Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Little. They are exemplary leaders and I wanted to learn from the best. Male students are sometimes loud and I get to know them. I wanted to surround myself with girls, and empower them. I like the leadership component. Leaders are created where they are appreciated and valued.
What is your impression of WYWLA thus far?
The teachers are hard working and the students are equally passionate about learning. I love the close-knit community. I appreciate that teachers are active learners too. Students are empowered to be leaders and it has been an amazing experience.
What is one piece of advice you try to inculcate in students?
Progress over perfection. As females it is very easy to strive for perfection. Remember that moving forward is just as important, if not more.
Where did you grow up? What were you like as a kid? A young student? Favorite subject growing up? Hobbies?
I am a product of Wake County Public School System graduate. I grew up in Holly Springs. My favorite subject was civics/social studies. I enjoyed the content but it was a high school teacher that took an interest in me that made a huge difference. I struggled in school. I was the only African-American student in many of my classes, but Mrs. Lamb, my social studies teacher, helped me believe in myself.
What is one fun fact about you?
I am an only child in my family, and a I have a pet wiener dog named Koko Chanel. I'm afraid of spiders too!
Where did you graduate from college? Major?
I graduated from North Carolina Central University in Elementary Education. The first two years of college I was a Pre-Pharmacy major. At the end of the year, I will have graduated from North Carolina State University with a Masters in School Administration. Being at WYWLA has opened my eyes to possibly working at the middle or high school levels.
What music do you listen to on the way to work? On the ride home? What type of music do you listen to/prefer? Favorite artists/ bands? Favorite songs?
I enjoy Rap music and Hip-hop; specifically Lil Wayne, Meg Stallion, and GlowRilla.
Are you a cold weather person or a warm weather one? What is your dream vacation?
I enjoy both temperatures. Bali in Indonesia is my dream vacation destination.
Favorite author? Book? Genre?
My favorite author is Colleen Hoover. I enjoy psychological thrillers. My favorite is Verity by Colleen Hoover because there are a lot of twists and turns.
