This month we spotlight
Mrs. Cindy Hoyt
Special Programs
What is your position at WYWLA?
Special Programs is my game. I have worked with so many of our students to achieve academic excellence. My position includes working with middle, high, and early college students. It has been great to work with Ms. Townsend’s 7th grade math class. The high school students know me as the “strategy teacher." Many juniors and seniors have benefited at St. Augustine's University, which allowed me to advise and incorporate support in a college environment.
Over 18 years, I Mentored and was a Mentor Coordinator for beginning teachers. I currently mentor a wonderful beginning teacher in her third year. I serve in various roles such as Department Chair, School Improvement, and Intervention Teams.
I co-host the Craft Club with Ms. Abu-Sharr. This is my third year as Group Leader with EF/ Education First Tours. We have traveled to Italy, France, and Spain and this year to Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. Next year, on to Greece and the Greek Islands!
How many years have you been at WYWLA? In education?
It’s hard to BELIEVE…it’s my 10th year at WYWLA. Building a program and my career was one step at a time in a journey of 38 years teaching.
Here is a quick view of my journey. Three years in Florida, York Elementary, Durant Road Middle School, Leesville Road Middle, and now WYWLA. Here’s a fun fact: I served on the Board of Directors at William Peace University (WPU) and was an Adjunct Professor instructing Testing and Evaluation and other curriculum courses.
NEA Resolutions Committee Member for 12 years and later voted to the Chair position. Fun Fact: I became the first North Carolina Educator to become the Chair (2018). My responsibilities involved establishing a strong educational policy and working with the NEA President:Lily Eskelsen Garcia, along with the Secretaries of Education, Arnie Duncan & Betsy DeVos.
Nationally Board Certified in Exceptional Education. I began the process when they first started in 2000, renewed twice, and continue to be a reflective practitioner.
Where did you start your career?
I began teaching middle school in Pensacola, Florida. We moved to St. Petersburg, Florida to be closer to family and enjoy the kids, beach and parks. My husband, Allen, then accepted a tech job at RTP and the move was perfect for our family to North Carolina.
What has been most satisfying about your career?
Knowing I can make a positive difference in someone’s life every single day. It’s those amazing times that I receive a note, message, call, or an in-person surprise visit that I learn of the inspirations that transpired.
Who are some of your biggest influences? Who are some of your OWLS?
My mom and my husband are my biggest influences. My mom, a teacher for 33 years, taught me to be strong and bold and continue to make good choices while moving a career forward. My husband, Allen, encourages me to, “remember the mission”, and focus on faith, fun, and helping others find their positives.
When you think back on your time at WYWLA, what stands out the most?
The Sisterhood of who we are and how we share leadership experiences with each other stands out the most. Each year the yellow rose ceremony represents the hope of success for each of our Owls. I continue to be inspired by our students, families, and staff members. We are all here for a reason and benefit from the united strength of love, support, and continual growth.
I can share the fact that this school and our leaders here supported me when my mom passed 6 years ago. And most recently when my son, Aaron, left early, passing away just 2 years ago on July 4th.
What is one lesson you make sure you pass on to all students?
The Best Comment to Remember: "We all have a Disability." Don’t be afraid to conquer your fears and embrace all you can to achieve your goals.
What comes next for you?
I can’t predict, but maybe I’ll run for mayor or open an inn. Maybe I'll move to Montana, Florida, or Maine, where my husband's family is and where the mountains meet the sea.
Everyone knows I love to travel. I am looking forward to having the time to visit and do all the things I could only dream about. It will be fun to take road trips or a spontaneous flight to see our friends and family. We are really looking forward to spending time with my daughter, Sarah, and my twin grandkids.
What excites you most about retiring?
No 4:45 AM alarm! It will be exciting to make my own schedule and do all those fun things we never have time for. I can't wait to experience the next adventure around the corner!
Who is on your musical playlist? What songs capture who you are?Music has always been part of my life. I enjoy listening to music, dancing, and going to concerts, especially outdoors. Music can certainly create a mood and is so much fun to change the channels between Christian, R&B, Rock, Beach Music, Pop, and Smooth Jazz. MercyMe, Lauren Daigle, Chris Tomlin, Leona Lewis, CSN&Y, Lenny Kravitz, Journey, Yes, Chris Stapleton, and if I really want to clean the house, Pink Floyd & Led Zeppelin (Stairway to Heaven).
Any parting words for students and staff members at WYWLA?
Always challenge yourself to make your day better. As the days pass and the years follow you will be amazed at how much you will have accomplished.
Move out of your comfort zone, take healthy risks, and experience all the possibilities that awaits you. You’ll never know until you're brave enough to try. No FEAR.
Love what you do. Care for others. Follow the gift you know is in your heart.
