February holidays and observances:
February 1st - March 1st
Black History Month, established in 1976 (48 years ago) is a month dedicated to the contributions of African Americans to society, and the rich history of all Africans around the world. Black History is always brimming with resilience, innovation, and triumph with a strong legacy of strength from those who have helped break barriers for equality. The people who have contributed have changed the world forever.
There are very significant figures that we already acknowledge in Black history like Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, along with many others., but what about the African Americans who have contributed to society in other positive ways?
Here is a couple of the countless African Americans who have shaped the world for the better:
Daisy Bates (1914-1999): She was a mentor to the Little Rock Nine, a journalist, civil rights activist, and was a speaker during the March on Washington.
Marie Van Brittan Brown (1922-1999): Brown was an African American nurse who co-invented Home Security Systems. Because the police were unresponsive in her city (Queens, New York), she invented a system where cameras could slide into the peephole in her front door, making the guests outside of her door visible.
Madam C.J. Walker (1867-1919): A woman who was born to formerly enslaved sharecroppers, and was orphaned at 7 years old. She suffered hair loss from a scalp condition, which led her to inventing an innovative line of Black hair care products. Her creation was called, "Madam Walker's Wonderful Hair Grower". This product led to Walker becoming the first female self-made millionaire in America.
Garrett Morgan (1877-1963): Morgan was an African American inventor that created the early versions of the traffic light, and the gas mask. Thanks to his inventions, we have safer roads. His gas masks also helped the users to descend into gas-filled tunnels beneath Lake Erie to rescue workers and retrieve bodies after the Cleveland Waterworks explosion on the 25th of July, 1916.
Thanks to those brilliant inventors, we can live life with a simplistic approach.

Groundhog day is a tradition celebrated in the United States and Canada every year on February 2nd. During this tradition, it is believed that when a groundhog comes from its burrow on February 2nd and sees it shadow, it will go back to it's den, and Winter will last for six more weeks. If it doesn't see its shadow, Spring will arrive early. In 2025, it's predicted that Punxsutawney (the groundhog) will not see his shadow this year.

Celebrating the people you love can be something that you do every day, but it’s especially recognized during Valentine’s Day. Since romance is highly recognized and celebrated in many countries, Valentine's Day is observed in different ways across the world. Even if it’s not on the 14th of February, each culture has its own unique traditions to honor it. In China, Valentine’s Day's adjacent holiday is called the “Qixi Festival” which is a tradition that’s based on an ancient Chinese story about forbidden love between a celestial weaver and a mortal man. In the Czech Republic, they celebrate on May 1st, where young couples make a pilgrimage to the state of Karol Hynek Macha, a famous Czech poet. In England, children sing special songs for candy, fruit, or money on Valentine’s Day. Although people celebrate Valentine’s Day differently, the holiday is still rooted in love and appreciation.
Along with that, here are some fun facts about Valentine’s Day in general:
Nearly 250 million roses are grown in preparation for Valentine's Day each year.
More than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolates are sold each year (58 million pounds of chocolate!)
145 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged every February 14, making Valentine’s day the second biggest holiday for greeting exchanges.

It was established in 1885 in honor of President George Washington’s birthday. According to the federal government, the holiday is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday”. Fun fact: Presidents Day is always celebrated the 3rd Monday of February, but Washington’s real birthday is February 22nd.
