First Generation is a feature that spotlights students that will be the first in the family to attend and graduate from college or a staff member who was the first in the family to do so. We hope this segment inspires others and that it offers support to all those around us who are or will be first generation!
NOVEMBER FIRST GENERATION
How would you describe yourself as a middle school student? How are you different now that you are in high school?
In middle school I was less aware of getting good grades and doing my assignments on time. Now in the ninth grade, I'm more determined to doing all of my work and earning good grades.
Do you feel added pressure /responsibility being the first in your family to attend/ graduate from college? Explain?
Yes, because my parents never got to attend college or even complete much schooling. I want them to be proud of me when I do go to college and when I graduate! I will also be setting a good example for my younger siblings because my older sibling is not attending college.
What career path would you like to pursue?
I would like to be an ultrasound technician. I would like to major in business and nursing.
While college is three and a half years away, have you started researching some?
I've looked at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. They have the programs I'm interested and it's a really good school.
When you face obstacle or challenges, how do you overcome them?
I talk to someone about it or simply just breathe. Everything will be ok.
Who are some of the people who have championed you throughout your life? Who inspires you to achieve/soar?
My family member, Reyna, champions and inspires me because I've seen how she worked hard to achieve her dream job. I also want my parent to be proud of me, to make them happy, and to thank them for all they do for me.
What piece of advice do you have to WYWLA students who will be the first in their family to attend/graduate from college?
It's all going to be worth it in the end. Work hard now- it'll all be worth it in the future!
