Teacher Feature is a segment that interviews and shares tidbits about a WYWLA staff member every month.
This month we spotlight
Mrs. Jennifer Townsend,
our 7th grade Science and Math teacher!
How long have you been in education? Where did you work prior to WYWLA?
This is the start of my 25th year teaching, after 4 years in Virginia and 20 years at Martin Middle School in Wake County.
What brings you to WYWLA?
I was ready for a change. I had worked at Martin Middle School for the past 20 years, mostly in 6th grade math. I needed something new, and WYWLA seemed like an incredible opportunity. I’m very happy here! One reason I wanted to come to WYWLA is that I felt that the schedule at Martin (40 minute classes and over 150 students) made it challenging to support my students and teach the best way possible. I feel that there is more time at WYWLA to be creative and it is much easier to get to know my students and support them better. I also have 3 daughters, so I know how extra special girls are!
What is your impression of WYWLA thus far?
This is a place to learn, not play. Students care very much about their success and understanding. The faculty and administration make careful decisions based on what is best for students. This school really is a wonderful place to teach and learn.
What is one piece of advice you try to inculcate in students?
Everyone can grow. It doesn’t matter your starting point, you can always get better at something if you make an effort. Also, learning can be fun!
Where did you grow up?
I grew up south of Richmond, VA, in a rural area.
What were you like as a kid? A young student? Favorite subject growing up? Hobbies?
I had a fun childhood, riding bikes and playing outside in my neighborhood. About 6 weeks into 7th grade (and all of 8th grade), my family moved to Louisville, KY. This was really a transformative experience to live near a vibrant city with lots of festivals and opportunities (far more than my small VA community). It was fascinating to see how much more inclusive the students in KY were with one another. I’ve always enjoyed school, and most subjects, but I realized my favorite subjects were science, math, and literature by high school. Learning has always been a rewarding experience, and I was a curious student. I enjoy reading, singing, and cooking.
What is one fun fact about you?
I have an RV motorhome and love to go camping and hiking in the mountains!
What do you listen to on the way to work? On the ride home? What type of music do you listen to/prefer?
I like 70’s and 80’s rock music, and you will often find me singing LOUDLY in my car both on the way to work and home. I love Earth, Wind & Fire, Journey, and James Taylor. My favorite songs are any James Taylor, September by Earth, Wind & Fire, and most Journey.
What was the last concert you attended? Best concert? Wish you had attended?
My last concert was James Taylor's. The best concert I've been to was Earth Wind & Fire. I wish i had attended Journey when Steve Perry was the lead singer.
Where did you graduate from? Major?
I graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Psychology.
