Teacher Feature is a segment that interviews and shares tidbits about a WYWLA staff member every month.
This month we spotlight
Ms. Brewington,
School nurse
What brought you to WYWLA?
I was assigned to WYWLA when the previous nurse changed positions within the school health program.
What is your impression of WYWLA thus far?
I love the sense of community at WYWLA. It starts from the top with Ms. Walker and you can feel the trickle effects to the staff and students. I have felt so welcomed here.
What is one piece of advice you try to inculcate in students?
To have integrity and self respect. You will get so much farther in life by being someone people can trust and by knowing who you are, what you stand for, and what you are not willing to compromise on. Values matter.
Where did you grow up? What were you like as a kid? A young student? Favorite subject growing up? Hobbies?
I am a military brat and have lived in 6 states and spent 3 years overseas in Aviano Italy. As a child, I was bossy and liked to be in charge. I loved school and learning, often at the top of my class. My favorite subject in school was history. I love to read (thank goodness for audiobooks) and spending as much time outside as I can with my family.
What is one fun fact about you?
I was in the military myself for four years as a nurse prior to coming into school based public health.
Where did you graduate from college? Major?
The North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (AGGIE PRIDE), I majored in Nursing.
What music do you listen to on the way to work? On the ride home? What type of music do you listen to/prefer? Favorite artists/ bands? Favorite songs?
I love to listen to Gospel music in the mornings. It uplifts me and encourages me, especially if I am going to go into a stressful situation/day. My favorite artist right now is Maverick City and I love their song Revelation 19:1
On my way home, I usually will listen to a podcasts, usually “The Daily” by The New York Times
What is one women’s empowerment song you love? Why?
I love Mary J Blige’s “Just fine”. The beat just gets me in a good mood and I love the lyrics to the hook:
So I like what I see when I'm looking at me
When I'm walking past the mirror
Ain't worried about you and what you gonna do
I'm a lady so I must stay classy
Got to keep it hot, keep it together
If I want to get better
See I wouldn't change my life, my life's just
Fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, ooooh
