This section of the WYWLA Post gives insight to students about clubs here at WYWLA and how they can impact OWLS and the world around them.
Run Club
DECEMBER INSIDE THE CLUB
Give a brief description of your club.
We are a group open to any student willing to work on their running endurance. We are not looking for perfection or fast runners. Run Club is made for challenging yourself physically and making friends. Having fun is required!
Who is the president or a good spokesperson for this club?
Ella Martin and Lydia Denz
What are your goals this year for the club?
Our goals are to work on pacing. We don’t need sprint stop sprint stop. Being able to listen to your body and run at a consistent pace is an important part of long-distance running. Being brave to push the pace is also another goal. We tend to get comfortable and stay at one pace. This year, pushing to walk less, running more, and finding a spot where you are running at a little faster pace than you thought you could are also other goals for this year.
How do you think this club will affect/push the students in the future?
Running is a great way to build mental toughness and community. You are out there pushing through hard physical activities, thinking you can’t possibly run three miles, let alone one mile. The support from others going through it with you really creates a bond. The feeling of accomplishment when you finish and realize, “Hey I did that!” translates to the future when presented with a challenge. The mental toughness created by running miles leads to the confidence of “I can do this!”
What skills will this club give to the students?
This club includes skills like stamina, mental and physical confidence, bravery to take on challenges, and teamwork.
What do you hope your members will get out of this club?
The belief in themselves that they can do hard things. That they don’t have to be in competition with other women. They can work together to push each other to achieve their goals. I want them to realize what their bodies are capable of doing and to love themselves for what their body can do, not what it can’t.
Student Government Association
DECEMBER
INSIDE THE CLUB
Give a brief description of your club.
Student Government is a club for students who want to improve school spirit and unity amongst the students at WYWLA. It’s ideal for those who want to promote positive change at our school and make a difference!
Who is the president or a good spokesperson for this club?
Kaimy Ignacio-Almazan is the student body president, Lauryn Monroe is the high school president, and Azalea Rowe is the middle school president.
What are your goals this year for the club?
Our goals this year are to increase unity amongst the grade levels, plan and organize events to bring the school together, and serve our school community.
How do you think this club will affect/push the students in the future?
SGA is ideal for students who are looking to build leadership skills. I think it teaches people to work with a variety of people, and at WYWLA in particular, I think it builds connections between our middle school and high school students. SGA builds confidence in students and encourages them to seek answers on their own,
What skills will this club give to the students?
This club will give students independence, leadership skills, creativity, and a sense of community
What do you hope your members will get out of this club?
I hope that the kindness and patience between older and younger members will be used outside of school, and that the confidence to speak up will be applied outside of school.
